Architect & interior designer in Berriew

Berriew is a black-and-white village on the River Rhiw, immaculately kept and tightly conserved. I work with homeowners here on timber-framed cottages, village houses and the properties around Glansevern.

The houses of Berriew

The village centre is a compact group of timber-framed and painted buildings around the church and the bridge, with later brick houses and farmhouses in the surrounding valley. Much of it is listed or within the conservation area, and the collective appearance of the village is carefully protected.

Where the value usually sits in Berriew

In a village this photographed, exterior change is rarely the opportunity. The valuable work is comfort and plan: warmth in thin-walled buildings, kitchens and bathrooms placed where a historic frame will accept them, and storage designed rather than accumulated.

Architecture and interiors, decided together

The wall you move decides the joinery that fits against it; the window you add decides the colour that works beneath it. Because I design both, decisions in Berriew houses get made once — plan, light, kitchen, storage, materials and lighting resolved as a single scheme rather than handed between an architect and a decorator six months apart.

Questions from Berriew owners
Can old cottages be made genuinely warm?

Yes, with breathable fabric, draught discipline and careful glazing decisions. Comfort is a design outcome rather than a product you buy.

Do you work in Berriew and the Rhiw valley?

Yes — Berriew, Garthmyl and the surrounding valley are within working range, alongside Welshpool and Montgomery.

We only want interiors help. Is that possible?

Yes. A £595 full-house walk-around and written design report covers layout, flow, colour, materials and finishes, with a follow-up conversation to take it further.

My first conversation with you is free. You do not need a finished brief — an outline of the property and what is not working is enough.
