Cheshire divides neatly into two design problems. In the Golden Triangle villages, the houses are large and the plans are frequently poor — merchant villas with three unused reception rooms and one crowded kitchen, and modern rebuilds that solved for square footage rather than daylight. Further south and west, around Nantwich, Bunbury and Tattenhall, the stock is older and quieter: sandstone and brick villages, canal-side plots, farmsteads with more potential in the outbuildings than in another rear extension.
