Oak Street
A generous family kitchen created by making the existing house work harder.
Oak Street is a perfect example of how thoughtful re-planning can completely change the way an existing home works — without relying on a large extension to do it.
The brief was to create a generous, sociable family kitchen that felt completely at home within the character of the property, while making much better use of the existing ground-floor space.

At the heart of the new scheme is a large kitchen designed around family life. A soft green island creates a natural gathering point, balanced by a full-height bank of warm linen cabinetry and carefully considered storage.
A bold checkerboard floor brings character and a sense of permanence, helping the new kitchen feel as though it has always belonged to the house rather than simply being a newly fitted room.

But much of the transformation comes from the details.
A secret door concealed within the kitchen cabinetry provides access through to the boot room, allowing a practical family space to sit immediately behind the kitchen without interrupting the calm of the main room. Bespoke fitted elements, a dedicated drinks area and banquette seating were all incorporated to make every part of the ground floor work harder.
The result is a kitchen that is beautiful, but importantly, it is designed around the realities of everyday family life — somewhere to cook, eat, entertain, work, gather and simply be together.

I worked closely with LG Blower throughout the construction process, translating the design intent into the finished space and resolving the details as the project came together.
Oak Street demonstrates something fundamental to the way I approach residential architecture: before adding more space, understand how the space you already have could work better.
Through intelligent planning, carefully considered joinery and a strong interior identity, an existing family home can feel completely transformed — without needing to become substantially bigger.
